Class: ESP for Law Students Duration: 8 weeks Meeting times: Tuesday/Thursday 1:00-2:50
Overview and Requirements: This class is especially designed for students in an Academic Intensive English Program who are planning to continue their studies in law in an American university. The class is designed to reinforce the main grammar points and academic writing structures through authentic content in the form of listening activities, readings and discussions. Students will be exposed to some of the language and terminology used in academic articles and videos pertaining to law throughout the 8 week elective. Students will also be conducting an inquiry-based research project on a topic of their choice, which will culminate in a written essay and mini-presentation of each student’s findings.
Objective: The objective is to expose law students to more relevant vocabulary, expose them to a variety of authentic reading and listening materials, and reinforce the language functions taught at the upper-intermediate and advanced level in an Academic English Program while studying authentic materials from a variety of academic sources. Students will also be learning about reading-to-write, a skill they will use throughout their university career.
Required Books: None
**All articles and readings will be either provided by the teacher or by the individual students from various academic resources. (Cornell Law Review, Harvard Law Review, American Bar Association, Nolo.com, White House website, etc.)
