Course Design Explanation
Length of course
The length of each example syllabus is 8 weeks which can be stretched out if the AIEP course implementing it is either 10 weeks, or shortened if the AIEP is 6 weeks. Often, instruction in these electives doesn't begin until the second week of instruction in a 10-week quarter, and instruction often ends in week 9 leaving students to study and take their final exams in week 10. Therefore, I felt 8 weeks of actual instruction to be sufficient in these syllabi.
Choice of materials
I chose to use materials from different online sources that are free to everyone, but are also considered to be good and relevant sources by the general public. I felt it important to keep the materials current, so as time goes on the teacher will need to find different videos and articles. Perhaps the teacher can use the same sources, but with time, will need to find more current articles. This will keep the material fresh, interesting and current, all of which are qualities that enhance the authenticity of the course.
Use of videos and readings
The teacher should use the videos and readings as preparation work for the in-class activities. The activities used in class should be communicative and similar to what students will encounter in a discussion class in university. Students must prepare the material at home and be ready for discussion and activities regarding comprehension and vocabulary in class.
In addition, I highly recommend teachers to flip as much of the instruction regarding grammar and paragraph/essay instruction as possible. This will allow in-class instruction to be communicative and dedicated to activities that reinforce rather than introduce topics. For more information on flipped lessons, teacher should read the following articles which explain the benefits of using flipped lesson plans.
