What is this all about anyway?
Many international students come to the Unites States with the hope of pursuing their education at an American university, either at the undergraduate or graduate level. These students are full of the desire and motivation to learn more and achieve academic success, but the vast majority of them are limited by language because they come from a country where English is not the primary language. We all understand that studying at the university level is not easy even when we are studying in our first language (L1), so it is not difficult to imagine the hurdles that international students have to pass over because they are studying in a language that is not their L1. In order to achieve their goals, they must first be able to linguistically survive a university class in their major. Therefore, the question that ESL instructors are asking is: how can we help prepare these students to the best of our ability?
My answer is English for Special Purposes (ESP) courses within their existing Academic Intensive English programs (AIEP). This website is dedicated to understanding what ESP courses are and how and why they can be implemented in existing university preparation programs. It is meant to give information for teachers and administrators who are interested in incorporating ESP courses into their programs.
